Tour the points of interest of Samian Wine
1. Wine Route of the Vineyard Villages on the South Side of Mt Karvounis
The wine route travels through the vineyard villages of the southern side of Mt Ampelos (which the locals call Karvounis). The starting point of the route is the archaeological site of the Samos Heraion, which is located a few kilometres from Pythagoreio. The route could be characterised as a 45-kilometre circular route by road that takes about 90-95 minutes, not counting stops.
2. Mytilinii – Pythagoreio Wine Route
The Mytilinii – Pythagoreio route is short, only 20-30 minutes long (without, however, any of the recommended stops along the way). Starting at the capital of Samos, the route to Mitilinii from the Zervou area is approximately 12 kilometres long, and provides many interesting sights along the way, such as vineyards and armakades (mounds of stones from the vineyard for the creation of terraces).
3. Wine Route in the capital of Samos-Malagari-Samos Wine Museum-Traditional Hamlet of Ano Vathy
This particular route in the capital of Samos, the Wine Making facilities, and the Wine Museum in Malagari, as well as in the traditional hamlet of Ano Vathy, is essentially a journey through the history of Samos wine, and shows how Samos wine is connected to all the historical, cultural, social, and economic periods of the capital of Samos and the port of Vathy.
4. Samos wine and the religious communities of Samos
The connection of Samos Wine with the religious communities of Samos is unique and it is linked to a long period of history that reaches present day, with sacramental wine for the Greek Orthodox Church, vin de messe for the Catholic Church, and kosher/mevushal Samos wines for the Jewish communities.
5. Karlovasi – Konteika – Ydroussa Wine Route
This wine route is an easy drive, as it covers points within a 20 kilometre distance, with a total duration of 45 minutes (not counting stops). It starts in the seafront zone of the city of Karlovasi. Visitors can see the always wavy beach where wine-growers used to wash their kofinia at the end of the vintage, the modernised Wine Making facilities of the Cooperative
6. Manolates – Ambelos – Stavrinides Wine Route
This is a mountainous route that crosses the wine producing villages located in the northern part of Mt Ampelos, which locals call Karvounis. This wine route is approximately 16 kilometres long in total and takes about 40 minutes, not including stops along the way.
7. Agios Konstantinos – Kampos Vourlioton – Vourliotes – Kokkari Wine Route
The wine route starts at the seaside hamlet of Agios Konstantinos. It is a route by road that is approximately 25 kilometres long, with a duration of about 50 minutes (without stops). Starting at the capital of the island, Samos, the route by car to Agios Konstantinos on the Samos-Karlovasi Rural Road takes about 25-30 minutes and is 19 kilometres long.
8. Platanos – Konteika – Ag. Theodori – Marathokampos Wine Route
The wine route that starts in Platanos, which is built at an altitude of 520 metres, is mountainous with a lot of twists and turns. By vehicle, it takes approximately 45 minutes (with no stops in between), as it crosses the north-western slopes of Mt Ampelos, which the locals call Karvounis.
9. The wineries of Samos
This particular thematic route is addressed mainly to wine connoisseurs and wine lovers, as well as to those who are interested in wine tasting and visiting a region’s wineries, especially an island region such as Samos, where the aspro moschato (white muscat) variety dominates 98% of Samos’ vineyards.
