The Samian wine from yesterday to today

The history of Samian wine begins with the Amazons and Dionysus, the god of euphoria, the vine and wine. The proud Amazons made the mistake of scorning him and fleeing to pine-clad Samos. Dionysos asked for the help of the Samians to defeat them, and after he succeeded, he gave the inhabitants of the isolated island the vine that produces the “Muscat grape” with the small spikes and taught them how to cultivate it mainly on mountainous terraces.

There are records of Samian wine from the Homeric epics, Hippocrates, Galen and Theophrastus as well as the poetry of Lord Byron, but also modern records in books by modern European writers such as Marguerite Yoursenaard.

At the beginning of the 17th century, the French traveler Tournefort recorded a production of 3,000 barrels of Muscat wine on the island. From the 19th century is recorded that Samos supplies the markets of the West and the East with branded wines. Since then, the Catholic Church has granted Samos the privilege of making wine with a certificate of Catholic mission. “Church wine” is also used by the Orthodox Church for the preparation of the Holy Eucharist.

The amphitheater-shaped patrimonial vineyards, at an altitude of up to 900 meters, demonstrate the long wine-making tradition of the island and ensure the microrogo muscat grape a slow and steady maturation, until it acquires very high levels of sugars and is enriched with the aromas of the dense vegetation. For all these reasons, Samian wine has one of the oldest registered designations of origin in Europe.
